No Jack, no sound?

Good news first: The new iPhone 7 ships with a Lightning to 3.5mm Audio Jack adapter.

Thus, the opportunity to use old headphones with the new iPhone still remains.

If you lose the adapter, don't worry: Apple sells the Lightning-to-Jack adapter for only 799 rubles. However, those users who want to recharge their smartphone while listening to music will have to resort to using additional accessories.

For example, Belkin has developed an adapter with charger and headphone jacks. It will have to cost no more than 40 euros (2900 rubles), but has not yet appeared on sale. The iPhone 7 also ships with wired headphones from Apple - of course, with a Lightning connector. With old Apple devices, the new headphones should also work seamlessly.

However, during the test, this was only possible if the operating system iOS 10 was installed on the mobile phone. Otherwise, an error message pops up stating that the connected accessory is not supported.

Various models

The manufacturer offers the new iPhone 7 in three versions with different amounts of internal memory: 32, 128 and 256 GB. Thus, Apple finally said goodbye to the smallest, 16 GB version, which, due to the lack of the ability to expand the built-in memory using a MicroSD card, no longer meets modern requirements. The device we tested has 128 GB and costs 66,000 rubles.

iPhone 7: design

At first sight appearance in comparison with has not changed very much. The smartphone has the same dimensions, the design is almost the same. The new model can only be recognized by the absence of the antenna inserts on the reverse side and the already mentioned audio jack.

After receiving a fair amount of criticism on the previous Apple model, the iPhone 7 is now protected with IP67 certification. Now the smartphone will be able to safely survive the fall into the bathtub or pouring rain. In addition, the manufacturer has detailed instructions for iPhone 7 owners with instructions on how to proceed if your phone gets wet.

The brightest star in the sky

In terms of screen resolution, Apple remains true to itself and continues to use a panel with the following parameters: 1334x750 pixels. Thus, a pixel density of 325 ppi is achieved on a 4.7-inch display. New to the HD display is color quality: like the iPad Pro, the iPhone 7 can handle an extended color space (DCI-P3).

In the test lab, the iPhone7's display performed very well. The maximum brightness of the screen is 544 cd / m2, the checkerboard contrast is at the level of 146: 1. Previously, Apple could boast of natural and accurate color reproduction. The first measurements of the characteristics of the iPhone 7 confirm the preservation of these qualities this time too. The white point is set optimally.

iPhone 7: camera performance

Unlike the Plus version, the iPhone 7 does not come with a wide-angle lens. The 12-megapixel camera now features optical image stabilization and a larger aperture (f / 1.8) than the previous model (f / 2.2).

Photos can also be saved in RAW format, which provides advanced options for post-processing images. With the iPhone 7, this now applies to Live Photos as well. As with the previous model, the iPhone 6s, the camera has the ability to shoot 4K video at 30 frames per second.

In the test lab, the main camera took clear photos with good resolution - however, we did not feel a real breakthrough in image quality compared to. The shutter time is 0.86 seconds and the photos are generally balanced and relatively neutral in color. In poor lighting conditions, the pictures look extremely bright - you cannot say from them that there was not enough light at the time of taking pictures. However, this comes at the expense of detail: the pictures are relatively soft.

Achilles' heel - a battery?

As you know, Apple uses batteries in its devices that can be called rather small. But the value alone does not mean anything - the iPhone 7 has a battery capacity of less than 2000 mAh. Another indicator by which you can judge battery performance is how the processor is handling the battery.

In our test, the 4.7-inch phone's online battery life was a good 9 hours 1 minute. This figure for the iPhone 7 belongs to the top of our smartphone ranking and is about the same.

For comparison: Samsung "sponsored" its Edge-phone a 3600 mAh battery, Apple generous only 1960 mAh.

The charging time is criticized: it will take the iPhone 7 a full 2 hours 34 minutes to fully restore its energy reserves. Quick Charge technologies on board the 4.7-inch smartphone have not found a place for themselves. Apple also saved on NFC by integrating functionality only for Apple Pay by default. In Russia, this service should appear before the end of autumn.

New functionality and iOS 10

By changing the Home button, Apple has thrown the physical button overboard by integrating a capacitive touch surface that is activated via Force Touch. The so-called Taptic Engine, developed by Apple, provides the feeling that your finger is pressing a physical button after all. After a short period of adaptation, unlocking the screen works very well.

However, this statement remains true only as long as the user does not put on gloves, since the button is probably only triggered by direct contact with the skin. Little advice: if you still want to unlock your iPhone by pressing a button, follow the next path through the smartphone menu: "Settings - General - Accessibility - Home - Open by pressing your finger".

What is iOS 10 capable of?

An interesting innovation in iOS 10: the function of waking the iPhone when you pick it up, for example, from the table - in the standard settings. In addition, Apple has completely redesigned the appearance of notifications and the Control Center. IMessage also received new functionality, including handwritten messaging.

iPhone 7: the alternative

Even many Apple fans know that there are mobile phones that are much better than devices from Cupertino. For example, our ranking of smartphones is dominated by models from Samsung. However, those who want an iPhone will not be happy with an alternative from the Android world in any case.

The slightly cheaper alternative to the iPhone 7 is therefore the previous model, the iPhone 6s. The version with 128 GB of internal memory currently costs 57,000 rubles. It performed well in our testing with a fast processor, solid camera and superb display.

Perhaps the world of cosmetics is the last place where you can expect testing of the new model of Apple iPhone. But since for me personally in any gadget, almost the most important thing is the camera, I took the novelty to the annual TFWA exhibition in Cannes, where cosmetic brands represent the main launches for the next year. In fact, it's like fashion week for fashion editors, but it's all about jars. Every autumn for seven days life is in full swing inside and outside the famous Cannes Palais des Festivals: meetings, negotiations, presentations, watching videos, perfume blotters ... I honestly tried to photograph the most interesting things. Moreover, thanks to quick access to the camera, which turns on even on the locked screen, I was able to discreetly shoot even what was prohibited. However, let spy games remain games. I will not post "classified materials" that brands want to keep secret for the time being; but I can say that in the next "perfumery and cosmetic" year, a lot of interesting things await everyone. In the meantime, my report on new products that have been given the green light.

Fragrances

I started my work as a photojournalist - rightly - with a selfie. I had to "shoot", frankly, the selfie is not my strong point: either the arms are too short, or the spatial orientation is violated. As a rule, instead of a face in the picture, you get a phone case and the back of your hand. Desperate, I stopped such experiments and began to involve in the filming gaping passers-by and lost their vigilance colleagues. But here everything worked out the first time (okay - the second time). Not that I have added dexterity, but since for the first time there is a special mechanism inside the camera that "compensates" for hand shake during photo and video shooting, the frame turned out to be quite clear and realistic.

Bvlgari perfumery had an incredibly beautiful stand this year. This "jewelry" brand knows everything about stones! And this knowledge formed the basis of the luxurious (like from the fairy tales of "A Thousand and One Nights") LE GEMME collection. Impeccably balanced perfume compositions, enclosed in multi-colored amphorae with the finest gold trim, enchanted literally everyone. One example is Irina, Le Gemme Imperiali: a composition of magnolia, jasmine and musk. It is impossible to break away. Naturally, I took dozens of pictures of this magnificence and everything turned out as a selection. The brightness and color fidelity required no filters at all, although the new version of Instagram has nice additions that are even better thanks to the wider color range and Retina HD display. So why didn't you need filters? The fact is that the increased aperture allows more light to hit the sensors and transmit the slightest color nuances.

Besides, two wonderful brands of niche perfumery - L'Artisan Parfumeur and Penhaligon's - are returning to Russia. I especially want to say about the latter. Penhaligon's is a true British olfactive saga, where each chapter (perfume) is a story about members of a large respected family. There is style, breed, plot, quality and ... mesmerizing visuals. In a word - a series, no worse than "Downton Abbey". I myself really like how the photo of the pavilion turned out. So many details! And they are all visible in the smallest detail.

Care

Among the novelties of the American market, GlamGlow masks were pleasantly pleased. I've always liked them, but now in the line created by the exemplary married couple Delimore, who got hooked on GlamGlow a good half of Hollywood, there are also lipotin products (that is, we are guaranteed volume), as well as nightly transforming care. During the presentation, I had fun as I could and took not only photos, but also small videos (somehow I will make a separate material). By the way, in the iPhone 7, images that come to life in Live Photo format can be edited. This, in fact, I did while everyone was drinking coffee.

Many new products for not only face care but also body care were traditionally presented at the Clarins stand. The brand's reputation as one of the main experts in body modeling, stretch marks control, weight loss ... is impeccable and has long been known all over the world. I strongly advise you to pay attention to the Body Fit anti-cellulite product with quince extract. It affects all types of adipocytes and significantly improves the situation. In addition, very soon there will be a moisturizing range for the face with echinacea extract, an eye cream with a tone against dark circles and a tissue mask that will "capture" the neck area, which is very, very important.

Atmosphere

And of course, the Cannes exhibition is not only a job. This embankment Croisette, and a sandy beach, and snow-white yachts, and oysters ... Since all this usually "happens" almost at night, when the hectic day of work ends, it can be difficult to beautifully shoot and convey in the frame all the charm of a warm October evening. Fortunately, this time I had no problem with it. Tons of atmospheric photos that annoyed friends freezing in Moscow are comfortably located in the bowels of my phone's memory (which is now somehow absolutely incredible - up to 256 GB). They calmly wait in the wings to pull me out of the depths of the autumn-winter depression from time to time.

Another good example on this topic. Traditionally, the most luxurious gala dinner during TFWA is hosted by Shiseido Corporation. It takes place in a wonderful place - in the SPA-hotel Les Mas Candille, a small, but so beloved by artists, town of Mougins. Every year, my colleagues and I not only admire the stunning views of Grasse from the elegant terraces of the hotel, but we also try to take pictures there. Always unsuccessful, because "it's dark and you can't see anything." This time everything turned out like in the photo below. The secret to success is a powerful 4-LED flash that shines up to 50% brighter. And the miracles don't end there. This flash adjusts to the color temperature of the environment, resulting in crisp, well-lit shots. It's not that I myself understood this with my humanitarian mind, it's just that before testing the new iPhone, I diligently studied the "materiel".

P.S. Well, and for sweetness, there are several applications that I have downloaded to edit photos.

  • Adobe Lightroom Mobile: is a mobile application with support for Adobe Photoshop technologies that allows you to process photos like a professional, import, edit and sync RAW and JPEG photos.
  • ProCamera- An intuitive interface that allows you to take great HDR photos and control the composition. The new version allows you to support shooting in RAW format in both automatic and manual modes.
  • FilMiC Pro- application for shooting mobile video in high quality... It has smooth zoom, front-facing and manual wide-angle and telephoto cameras. By the way, it was with the help of this application that Sean Baker's film "Mandarin" was filmed, which was nominated for the title of the best picture at the Film Independent Awards.

I recently bought myself a film camera - big, heavy and insanely beautiful. Having tested it in practice, I noticed a curious phenomenon: standing on the street and photographing strangers, I suddenly noticed that passers-by no longer perceive a person with a camera as a photographer. No one covers his face, no one walks around me so as not to spoil the frame, no one even pays attention to the thing in my hands. And then I took out my phone and started filming people in the same way as I had filmed before. The reaction was completely different. Some smiled, others turned away, others went around me in a circle, trying not to spoil the frame - in general, behaved in a completely natural way in relation to the street photographer.

While we were figuring out which is better - Nikon or Canon, more than one generation of people has grown up in the world who perceive photography only as a function of a smartphone. Compact cameras have long gone to the "dustbin of history", and this does not sadden me at all, but the change in the perception of photography as a process makes me think. On the other hand, some things remain the same. People still argue about which is better (Sony or LG? Galaxy or iPhone?), And there is still no definite answer to this question. So today we are going to compare six flagship smartphones to find out which one still shoots better.

⇡ Input data

A number of smartphones today have two cameras at once, and the very logic of having a second lens and sensor is different. Other smartphones still use a single camera module. Some of my fellow journalists reasonably believe that it is the single modules that show the best results in shooting.

So for the purity of the experiment, the second cameras did not participate in the comparison at all - today we will only talk about the usual shooting mode. The fashionable portrait mode of the iPhone 7 Plus was not used, nor was the wide-angle camera on the LG G6 or the shallow depth-of-field imitation on the Huawei P10 Plus.

⇡ Testing

V different tests we will evaluate the result according to various criteria, but sharpness and detail will be key factors. In addition, the correct exposure and white balance will affect the result. In each test, the smartphone can score 0, 1 or 2 points. The best smartphone will be named with the largest number points. Go.

⇡ Shooting through glass

Nobody, of course, is recognized, but this is one of the most popular genres of photography. The view from the hotel window, the landscape through the windshield of the car, the view from the plane - we often shoot this. At first glance, nothing complicated, but since the glasses are often tinted, this pretty much confuses the automatic white balance. So in the first test, in addition to the overall picture quality, we will also evaluate the correct setting of the color temperature.

The same scene in full size from cameras , and

This is a pretty tricky scene for mobile cameras. Shooting against the sun (which, however, is in the haze and does not get into the frame) in this case could give three different results. In the first, the sky was correctly exposed, and all the objects in the lower half of the frame were too dark. In the second, the bottom half of the frame is well defined, and the top one looks too light. Well, the third option is an average between the first two.

The most correct white balance is given by Sony Xperia XZ Premium and iPhone 7 Plus, but according to subjective feelings the picture from Samsung Galaxy S8 + looks the best. The result of the Huawei P10 Plus looks good too, but the white balance is incorrect. The HTC U11 and LG G6 are far worse. The latter overestimates the contrast during the software processing of the picture after shooting. Probably, the company thinks that the end user likes contrasting pictures more, but the reception itself is rather stupid. Let's change the shooting point and see the result in more “correct” lighting.

There is plenty of light, there is a shadow in the frame, by which you can estimate the breadth of the dynamic range. The difficulty lies only in the presence of tinted glass, which often confuses the automatic color temperature detection algorithm.

The Samsung Galaxy S8 + delivers an excellent picture with no dips in the shadows and highlights on the aircraft fuselage and in the sky, but the white balance is far from correct. HTC U11 showed itself best of all here, and if we talk about the overall sharpness and detail of the picture, then there will be two leaders - these are Samsung and HTC devices. The Sony Xperia XZ Premium's higher resolution camera adds neither sharpness nor detail, and the LG G6 has overdone contrast again.

  • Apple iPhone 7 Plus - 1 point,
  • HTC U11 - 1 point,
  • Samsung Galaxy S8 + - 2 points,
  • LG G6 - 0 points
  • Huawei P10 Plus - 1 point,

⇡ Macro photography

Smartphone manufacturers rarely specify the minimum focusing distance in the characteristics of the built-in cameras, so here I had to start from the "close to the subject" position, and then gradually move the smartphone back until the moment when it could focus. The end result was roughly the same, but for the sake of reliability, I shot two scenes: flowers in a well-lit room and coffee beans at home with daylight from a window on cloudy weather.

This seemingly simple scene caused difficulties for several smartphones at once. It seemed that there was enough light in the room, but when the lens "gaze" is directed to one small point, it turns out that the lighting for macro photography is insufficient.

Some shots (HTC U11 and Sony Xperia XZ Premium) show a little noise. All have good color reproduction, but the G6 overestimates the contrast again. In terms of sharpness, the Galaxy S8 + is again in the lead, LG has the second result, the pictures from the iPhone 7 Plus and HTC U11 look a little worse, the outsiders are Huawei P10 Plus and Sony Xperia XZ Premium.

  • Huawei P10 Plus - 1 point,
  • Sony Xperia XZ Premium - 1 point
  • Big smartphones. The price for them is higher, and the advantages are sometimes very controversial. And today I have just such a gadget: big and for a lot of money.

Of course, I'm talking about the iPhone 7 plus, the price tag for which is truly inhumane. Sometimes one gets the impression that a personal security should be attached to each copy, so that such a significant monetary acquisition is not resisted. Therefore, for safety, a big, strong, bearded Dima (our subscriber) will be with me.

I will not talk about the fact that there is a large display, protection from water and dust according to the IP 67 standard (with it you can dive shallowly into the pool for a minute or wash with the dishes).
I will not say that he does a complete mess in performance, because of which I downloaded half of the AppStore and disappeared for a week without leaving my home.

Why does a smartphone need two cameras?

In fact, there are even three of them, after all, there is also a front one with 7 MP, which now shoots honest FullHD. Happiness for bloggers, but only 30 fps. Want 25 or 24? - use a third party app (I installed Filmic Pro).

Let's move on to the main cameras.

One camera received a wide-angle lens with an aperture of 1.8. It is high time! In fact, this gives us a cleaner picture in low light. Otherwise, the iPhone always gave us good quality photos with natural colors without artificially enhancing saturation and contrast as in many other smartphones.

The focal length is still about 28 mm. And even better stabilization. You can safely shoot a smooth video, but keep in mind that stabilization will certainly not help with strongly crooked legs :). In addition to great photos, the camera allows you to shoot 4K video at up to 30 fps.

Well, now the main thing - what kind of neighbor has the main camera got?

And this is a telephoto lens with a focal length of 56 mm and aperture ratio of 2.8, without stabilization. Indeed, why is there stabilization, because we all know: the smaller the angle, the less noticeable the shaking.

What do we get in fact? At the moment, the camera has a "Portrait" mode, where Yabloko put a beta version of the software for creating bokeh, which tries to blur the background for you, but does it so clumsily that it's easier to take just a photo and then blur the background in the application.

Because of the small aperture, this mode only requires good light, really good light. Even in the soft lighting of the cafe, it was difficult to "blur" the lamps in the background.

Of course, all this will be completed in the future and, perhaps, the regime will be very nimble, but at the moment it only causes tears. Especially if you remember about the price of this gadget.

Another funny thing: in normal lighting and in the “Photo” mode there is a switch button for 2x (double zoom), by pressing which, the camera switches to telephoto automatically. This, of course, is correct, but in poor light, there is just an electronic zoom, and sometimes during the day. And you will not understand whether the switch has occurred if you do not stupidly cover one of the lenses with your finger. The smartphone will not inform you about this in any way!

    Conclusions.
If you are a fan of the brand and know about such things as “cashback”, “Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday”, which allow you to save on purchases, then this smartphone is probably worth buying, if only because of the cool applications, many of which are only for iOS. I'm talking about applications for video and photography right now. The smartphone is smart and comfortable, but our poor brother in a difficult time of crisis needs to think twice before taking it, and the built-in telephoto lens shouldn't even be in the top ten purchase arguments, it's just a bonus.
