Jerusalem artichoke or earthen pear is a food and medicinal plant, a relative of sunflower. Its homeland is in North America, where the plant is still found in the wild today. Its name comes from the Tupinamba tribe - the aborigines of Australia, who brought root vegetables with them to European countries in the 17th century. Since then, Jerusalem artichoke, the benefits and harms of which continue to be studied today, has entered the treasury of medicine.

Jerusalem artichoke: benefits for the body

Since the 80s of the last century and especially the last 20 years, large-scale biochemical studies have been carried out that have confirmed the medicinal properties of Jerusalem artichoke.

From the aerial parts and tubers of plants in many countries of the world, herbal remedies, biocorrectors, functional and dietary nutrition dishes, nutritional supplements, medicines, and therapeutic and preventive cosmetics are produced.

The beneficial properties of the plant are due to its ability to accumulate a natural polysaccharide - inulin - in the tubers. Once in the gastrointestinal tract, the polysaccharide is broken down.

Part enters the systemic bloodstream, and the undigested part passes through the intestines, collecting and excreting:

  • toxic and radioactive substances;
  • cholesterol conglomerates;
  • excess lipids.

Parts of inulin chains that enter the blood also cleanse it of harmful substances. It has been established that Jerusalem artichoke does not accumulate pesticides, nitrates, radionuclides, and heavy metal salts from soils contaminated with these elements.

Inulin has a stimulating effect on the intestinal muscle tissue, ensuring rapid transport of food and cleansing the gastrointestinal tract of undigested food residues. Jerusalem artichoke flour is part of probiotics that restore the natural microbiocenosis of the gastrointestinal tract. Regular use of tubers and preparations stimulates the synthesis of endogenous vitamins and increases the body's protective properties.

Inulin has antitumor properties. In Japan, Jerusalem artichoke is introduced into milk formulas, baked goods, and drinks. It has been established that thanks to them, Japan has the lowest mortality rate from cancer of the digestive system. Plant preparations promote rejuvenation and prolongation of life.

The root crop absorbs and accumulates a large amount of silicon from the soil, which is involved in the construction of tissues:

  • pituitary gland and brain;
  • lens of the visual analyzer;
  • thyroid gland;
  • kidney;
  • hearts.

Without a sufficient amount of the mineral in the body, elastin production decreases, which negatively affects the structure of the vascular wall, skin, hair, and nails. The body needs biophilic silicon, which can bind to phospholipids, proteins and pectin. In this form, silicon is better absorbed by the body. Suppliers of biophilic silicon are plants that can accumulate it from the soil, in particular Jerusalem artichoke.

Jerusalem artichoke does not contain selenium - a substance that is necessary for the health, growth and functioning of the body. But interesting research was carried out at Irkutsk University. It turned out that when Jerusalem artichoke is introduced into the body, the absorption of selenium from food increases.

Organic acids normalize the functioning of the digestive system. They stimulate the secretory function of its organs.

A large number of proteins in Jerusalem artichoke not only provide the body with “building material”, they are similar in structure and properties to thymus proteins, which activate and restore the gland - one of the main parts of the immune system. The later the involution (reverse development) of the thymus occurs, the longer the body remains young.

Medicinal properties

Tuberous sunflower (another name for the plant) was used in Indian medicine before the discovery of America. Earthen pear is used in folk and official medicine in the treatment of many diseases.

Ground pear has:

  • diuretic;
  • laxative;
  • reparative;
  • vasodilator;
  • antiatherosclerotic;
  • antihyperglycemic;
  • antitumor effect.

The first evidence of the use of inulin-containing plants in the treatment of heart disease, aging, obesity and diabetes can be found in the works of Avicenna dating back to the 10th century. Modern research methods have significantly expanded the list of indications for the use of Jerusalem artichoke.

What diseases does it help with?

Jerusalem artichoke is used in the treatment of various pathologies:

1. cardiovascular system:

  • hyper- and hypotension;
  • tachycardia;
  • anemia;
  • heart rhythm disturbances;
  • stroke;

2. Digestive system:

  • inflammation of the pancreas and intestines;
  • insufficient secretory function of the digestive system organs;
  • dysbiosis of the gastrointestinal tract;
  • ulcers of the stomach and duodenum;
  • dyspeptic syndromes;
  • poisoning;
  • prevention of stomach and colon cancer;
  • has a hepatoprotective (protects the liver) effect;

Jerusalem artichoke preparations improve the condition of patients with cancer before and after chemotherapy and radiotherapy. They remove toxins, protect against negative radicals, help restore mucous membranes, and increase immunity. Jerusalem artichoke helps remove stones and sand from the kidneys, urinary and gall bladder.

Rules for taking Jerusalem artichoke

Jerusalem artichoke must be taken for a long time. Studies have shown that using Jerusalem artichoke for 20-30 days normalizes blood pressure. Jerusalem artichoke for constipation or a tendency to it improves the transport and motor function of the gastrointestinal tract.

To cleanse the skin and alleviate the condition of pathologies of the skeletal system, it is necessary to take baths with Jerusalem artichoke leaves every other day.

When treating diabetes mellitus, taking Jerusalem artichoke can affect the amount of insulin. Therefore, the dose of the Jerusalem artichoke drug must be calculated by an endocrinologist, and treatment must be carried out under regular monitoring of blood sugar in order to correctly adjust the amount of insulin.

However, if the blood clotting function is impaired and there is a tendency to bleeding, Jerusalem artichoke preparations should be used in short courses - no more than 7-10 days. The dosage of drugs also requires correction - it needs to be halved.

Beneficial properties for weight loss

Jerusalem artichoke is a valuable product for normalizing weight. Its use in food helps to activate digestion. The plant fibers of the root vegetable help to “start” gastrointestinal peristalsis. Cleansing the intestines of harmful substances, helminths and undigested food debris helps to activate the metabolic process, utilize fatty tissue, and better absorb nutrients from less food. For those who are on any diet, Jerusalem artichoke helps muffle the feeling of hunger, since, by swelling, dietary fiber fills the stomach, and it sends a “signal” to the brain about satiety. Inulin enhances the breakdown of fats and provides the body with the necessary energy for metabolism.

Jerusalem artichoke has diuretic properties and removes excess water from the body, eliminating swelling and several kilograms.

How to use for men's health?

Jerusalem artichoke is useful not only for women.

His drugs are capable of:

  • improve potency;
  • treat sexual dysfunction, especially caused by circulatory disorders and stress;
  • reduce the risk of developing prostate adenoma.

Jerusalem artichoke can be harmful if there is a bleeding disorder. It is necessary to carefully use earthen pear as food for cholelithiasis and urolithiasis. The root vegetable can cause stone movement, blockage or damage to the ureters or bile ducts.

Sometimes you can hear outlandish names - “earthen pear” or “Jerusalem artichoke”. Both of them refer to the same plant - Jerusalem artichoke, which informed people successfully use for weight loss. The edible part is the tubers of the plant. They have a certain resemblance to potatoes. However, the root vegetable differs from potatoes in its special sweet flavor.

For some reason it has not gained popularity in Russia, and only a few know about its existence. Completely in vain. Without false modesty, this miraculous vegetable has a number of unique properties. In particular, it has a beneficial effect on the digestive system and the ability to actively help in reducing body weight. Jerusalem artichoke for weight loss (reviews of its use for weight loss inspire dietary feats) is not only possible, but even necessary. Your body will certainly thank you, and your slimmer figure will be especially grateful to you.

Jerusalem artichoke differs from other root vegetables in its high inulin content. Absorption of this substance does not occur in the intestines, so the total calorie content of this vegetable is quite low. It does not provoke a surge in insulin, such as fructose, glucose, and starch. For this reason, it is advisable to introduce Jerusalem artichoke into the diet of everyone who is on any diet to lose weight. It perfectly suppresses the feeling of hunger and corrects the functioning of the stomach, which is important in the process of weight loss.

Separately, it should be said about fiber, which Jerusalem artichoke is rich in. In this case, it is the main driver of weight loss. The thing is that digestion and breakdown of this natural substance does not occur in the intestines. Fiber passes through it like a whisk, cleaning out harmful ballast from the body - the notorious toxins and wastes. In a cleansed body, metabolism is immediately activated - at least fat and carbohydrates. As a result, we lose a lot more calories at rest and, accordingly, lose weight.

Additionally, when dietary fiber enters the stomach, it swells and signals the brain to finish eating. The only prerequisite for this is an increase in the volume of water consumed. Thus, we are filled with much less food than before.

Jerusalem artichoke tubers (or rather, a 100-gram piece of them) contains 61 calories. This is a fairly low indicator, so this root vegetable can be safely consumed for the purpose of effective and, most importantly, healthy weight loss.

Consequences for the figure

Positive:

  • ridding the body of harmful and polluting substances;
  • normalization of intestinal microflora;
  • saturating the body with energy (useful for sports – to enhance the effect);
  • eliminating constipation;
  • gentle and gradual weight loss without compromising health.

Negative – flatulence (only if you eat Jerusalem artichoke raw).

Jerusalem artichoke is one of the vegetables that have almost no contraindications. This is very convenient for those who want to lose weight but have health problems. The only option when this root vegetable cannot be consumed is individual intolerance and allergic reactions.

Rules for preparation and consumption

Those interested in this miraculous root vegetable are usually looking for an answer to the question - how to cook Jerusalem artichoke for weight loss. The vegetable can be eaten raw as one of the ingredients in dietary salads. It is also used to prepare cream soup or puree, which can be served as a side dish.

Fresh root vegetables are grated on a coarse grater or cut into slices of any size. When fried, it makes a wonderful addition to any side dish. If you steam the vegetable, it can successfully replace mashed potatoes. Boiled Jerusalem artichoke is most often added to soups and casseroles are made from it. In addition, juice is squeezed from the tubers of this root vegetable, which is very effective in treating the intestines. And a healthy intestine, as you know, is the key to rapid weight loss.

If you want to quickly say goodbye to extra pounds, you should replace your last meal with a Jerusalem artichoke cocktail. It must be grated on a coarse grater and juice squeezed from half a large lemon must be added to it. In this case, you will need to have breakfast and lunch exclusively with low-calorie dishes and products. Nutritionists also advise eating a little pre-grated Jerusalem artichoke with 4-5 drops of lemon juice about half an hour before breakfast and lunch.

The given diet can reduce the daily caloric intake of a person losing weight by 500-600 kcal. This is quite enough to start the weight loss process.

Dish recipes

Literally every housewife who has been informed about the benefits of Jerusalem artichoke knows how to prepare it. There are plenty of options: boiling, frying, stuffing, marinating, stewing and baking.

Lentil and Jerusalem artichoke stew

You will need: fresh Jerusalem artichoke tubers (250 grams), one diced onion, a pair of garlic cloves, two cups of drinking water (can be replaced with vegetable broth), one cup of lentils pre-soaked for 3-4 hours (it is better to use red), one bay leaf, 8 fresh mushrooms and half a diced sweet pepper.

Peel the earthen pear tubers, wash them and cut them into small cubes. Then heat a frying pan, pour a little vegetable oil into it and pour in the Jerusalem artichoke cubes. They need to be lightly fried. Then you need to reduce the heat and simmer the earthen pear for 7 minutes, then add the garlic cloves and onion. All together should be simmered until the onion becomes soft and begins to emit an aroma. Then you need to add water, pour in the lentils, throw in the bay leaf and cook all the ingredients over low heat for 25 minutes.

Readiness is determined as follows: the mixture should be quite thick, and the Jerusalem artichoke cubes should be soft. As soon as the vegetables are ready, add the peppers and mushrooms to them and simmer everything together for another 10 minutes, after which the bay leaf can be pulled out. This dish is traditionally served with lean fish or meat.

Jerusalem artichoke cabbage soup

You will need: fresh Jerusalem artichoke tubers (from 2 to 4 tubers - depending on size), one onion, lean fish (300 grams), greens (dill/parsley), nettle, sorrel, (one bunch of each ingredient), and black pepper (peas).

First, disarm the nettle - keep it in boiling water with a small amount of salt for 4-5 minutes. Then cut it into strips. Cut the onion into cubes and lightly fry in vegetable oil. Chop the earthen pear into small slices. Pour boiling water over all of the listed ingredients (except sorrel) and cook until tender, indicated by the softness of the Jerusalem artichoke. Literally 2-3 minutes before it is completely ready, throw the chopped sorrel into the pan. Pour the cabbage soup into portions, putting a small slice of baked or boiled fish in each, and garnish with herbs.

Brief summary

The benefits and harms (if you can call flatulence that way) of Jerusalem artichoke are, of course, incommensurable. At the same time, it is quite natural that it is impossible to obtain an immediate and significant result with its help, because the restructuring of all types of metabolism in the body will occur gradually, without jerks. It should be noted that the effectiveness of Jerusalem artichoke in the process of losing weight directly depends on the individual characteristics of each person losing weight. Don't be upset if the result is somewhat disappointing. Think about how to correct the situation - include exercise, reduce your daily caloric intake, review your own diet (if you haven’t done this yet).

Jerusalem artichoke dishes are very tasty, so you will be happy to lose weight. And positive emotions have a beneficial effect on the final result. Therefore, buy (dig up) Jerusalem artichoke, arm yourself with recipes and start fighting excess weight for a slim figure right now.

Inulin and fiber

Regular consumption of this fruit has a beneficial effect on the health of rheumatism; the high potassium content ensures good drainage, thereby helping with swelling.

The main value of the vegetable, however, lies in its content of inulin (16%), a carbohydrate suitable for diabetics to reduce glycemic levels.

Other medicinal effects such as lowering cholesterol, regulating blood pressure, improving digestive health, protecting the liver and kidneys, and anti-stress and detoxification effects have recently been demonstrated scientifically.

In terms of nutritional importance, tubers are valued primarily because of their high content of important carbohydrates, which makes Jerusalem artichoke a low-energy dietary food product.

This element is not absorbed in the digestive tract and acts as insoluble fiber. Its consumption also has a beneficial effect on reducing glycemia (in contrast to energy-rich foods high in sugar, animal fats and starches). This is especially beneficial for diabetics and people with weakened pancreas.

It is important not to confuse inulin and insulin! Inulin is a plant polysaccharide that is completely independent of insulin, the pancreatic hormone that controls glycemia.

Its positive metabolic effect is that it has a minimal effect on glycemia and does not lead to an increase in the demand for insulin secretion.

Diabetes

It is known that ground pear is recommended for inclusion in the diet of both types of diabetics. What are the benefits and harms of diabetes (if any harm at all?).

The importance of inulin in diabetes
We are talking about dietary fiber, the consumption of which brings many health benefits. It is practically not hydrolyzed by human digestive enzymes and, therefore, passes through the stomach and small intestine without changes.

Only in the large intestine does the substance ferment microbiologically and facilitate the proliferation of beneficial intestinal bacteria of the genus Bifidus. They synthesize B vitamins and stimulate the absorption of some important ions (Ca, Fe).

Inulin is very important for the human body due to the following beneficial effects:

  1. Create a source of nutrients.
  2. Creating optimal conditions for bifidobacteria.
  3. Protection of the large intestine from inflammatory and tumor diseases.
  4. Strengthening the immune system.
  5. Helping to increase the synthesis of vitamins from their precursors.
  6. Glycemic regulation.
  7. Reducing the glycemic index of food.
  8. Reducing fat and cholesterol levels.
  9. Increased absorption of minerals.

In this regard, some complications often arise - flatulence and bloating - therefore the recommended dose is
