If you've been on a diet all week, but want to loosen up a little on the weekend without too much impact on your waist, you're in the KM20. Healthy lifestyle brunches are arranged here, but they turn a blind eye to the number of calories: for example, you can treat yourself to pancakes with ricotta and coffee caramel (500 rubles), brioche with curd cheese and blueberries (400 rubles), and also Mimosa and Bloody Mary".

In the modern world, meals are not limited to breakfast, lunch and dinner. The variety of feasts is amazing, and sometimes it is quite difficult to figure out what this or that option is. This is especially true for those cases when you are invited somewhere, and you cannot imagine not only how you want to look, but also what they will serve there. In today's article, we will tell you what a lunch actually is and how to distinguish it from the popular brunch.

Lunch

Lunch is traditionally called a second breakfast. As a rule, it is held between 12 and 13 hours of the day. For lunch, a regular table is laid, it is possible to use cloth napkins and an elegant tablecloth, vases with fresh flowers, as well as candles or fruits, if lunch is held at your home.

As for serving dishes, it is possible to change two or three varieties. Usually these are light salads, soup in a miniature cup, spaghetti and seafood dishes are also allowed. One of the features of the lunch is the abundance of pastries, such as croissants or biscuits. From drinks, light dry wine is acceptable, but iced tea is more often served.

business lunch

A business lunch is somewhat different from a regular one. Usually it provides for a preliminary invitation by phone. As a rule, the lunch itself takes place in a small restaurant or cafe and involves a fairly casual dress code. Of course, this does not mean that you can come to it in a T-shirt and ripped jeans, but a discreet dress or a shirt with trousers will be more than appropriate. Regarding payment, the one who invites usually pays.

Business lunch includes three courses: appetizer, main course and dessert. Serving is quite simple: forks for appetizers, a fork and knife for the main course, and a spoon for dessert. All this is located along the edges of the plate, a pie plate for bread is placed a little higher on the left. Depending on the choice of drinks, a glass of water, as well as a glass of wine and a cup of tea or coffee, can stand above the plate on the right.

brunch

The main difference between brunch and lunch is in the atmosphere of the event, as well as time. Brunch is the meal that takes place between breakfast and lunch, around 11 am. Most often, brunch involves informal friendly communication, so it is often held on Sundays. It can be just a meeting of friends with families, or it can be a corporate party at the head, involving the presence of wives / husbands and children. The atmosphere is most often laid-back, and picnics are often arranged.

From food, various types of pastries are most preferable, as well as grilled vegetables or fish. Desserts and fresh fruits will be appropriate. There is no change of dishes, since the brunch is a large buffet, which each guest can come up to and take what he wants. It is important to make sure that you have enough soft drinks in advance, as well as low-alcohol drinks with ice if you intend to serve them.

Such serving is done not only to create a friendly atmosphere, but also so that the hostess of the house is relieved of the duties of a waitress and can have a good time with the guests. So, if you are planning to organize a small brunch this coming weekend, be guided by the fact that organizational moments should be minimal. The main thing is a good mood.

The basic rules that combine lunch and brunch include light food, casual conversation, as well as a short duration of time. Keep in mind that lunch and even Sunday brunch - This is not a dinner party, so you should not stretch them out for the whole day. Of course, you can make a brunch that smoothly flows into lunch and dinner, but do not forget to warn the guests about this - they may have other plans for the evening.

In Europe, the tradition of brunch, that is, breakfast, smoothly flowing into lunch, has more than a hundred years. For the first time, the British writer Guy Beringer spoke in detail about this phenomenon in an essay "Brunch: Excuse" published in 1895 in the magazine Hunter's Weekly. In particular, Beringer wondered why not replace England's traditional early Sunday lunches, this "post-church test of heavy meats and savory pies," with a new meal that is served around noon and begins with tea, coffee, marmalade and other breakfast items, and then moves on to something more substantial. “Brunch is fun, sociable, and provocative. It encourages communication, gives a good mood and a sense of contentment with oneself and one's neighbors, it sweeps away all the worries and intricacies of the working week, ”wrote Guy Beringer. In the 1930s, with the help of Hollywood stars, accustomed to getting up late after wild parties, brunches became popular in the United States. In Moscow, this format began to appear about ten years ago, but mainly in restaurants at hotels - for example, in a restaurant "A park" hotel Ararat Park Hyatt Moscow brunches have been held since the mid-2000s. “For a long time, we were faced with the opinion that brunch, in general, is an exclusively Western European heritage, which is honored mainly by foreigners who have moved with their families to Russia,” says Stephen Ansell, general manager of the hotel. “Now I can definitely say that brunch is the favorite format of long family feasts for many Muscovites.” Recently, brunches have begun to appear in many establishments - from Saxon + Password And OliOli before Bao+Bar And Beer Happens. In some restaurants, these are just separate menus for those who woke up at one in the afternoon and want to combine both breakfast and lunch, but do not want to cook. In others, there are entire social events. But in any case, this format has already taken root in Moscow: according to the CEO "Turandot" Artem Sibiryakov, on average, 400-450 people come to the restaurant for brunches over the weekend. Brunches in "Ararat Park Hyatt" every Sunday is visited by about 100 guests, and the hotel "Metropol"— from 170 to 220 people. Anna Demyanova, Head of F&B Department "Metropolis" notes that the majority of visitors are not hotel guests, and only 25-30% of foreign guests are foreigners.

"Southerners"

Time: Sundays from 12:00 to 17:00

In the restaurant that opened this summer on Akademika Sakharova Avenue, brunches are arranged on a southern scale. Children are treated free of charge, and adults for 1,500 rubles. provide unlimited access to the brunch menu, which includes about 25 items: salads, appetizers, specially prepared pastries and hot dishes. In addition, each time the chef of the restaurant, Roman Shubin, prepares a special menu: for example, fish and seafood, roasted veal or suckling pig. This year, the last Sunday brunch will take place on December 4, as the rest of the weekend is already booked for corporate parties. And from January 2 to January 8, late breakfasts, flowing into lunches, will be served daily to the delight of everyone who has already eaten homemade "Russian salad". After that, brunches will take place as usual.

There is nothing surprising in the fact that the popularity of this format is growing. Firstly, residents of the metropolis wake up late after Saturday parties and go to breakfast closer to noon. Secondly, brunch is a good reason to go somewhere with the whole family or meet with a large group if you don’t want to host friends at home. “In our restaurant, brunches are popular with guests of all ages, however, as a rule, these are still families with children,” says Artem Sibiryakov. “But this is not just a Sunday family trip to a restaurant, but an opportunity to taste the restaurant's traditional menu in unlimited quantities for a fixed and affordable fee. And the availability of unlimited alcohol makes brunch a very popular format for celebrating a birthday. In this case, you do not need to worry about the final cost of the feast (it is known in advance), and burden yourself with the search for animators to entertain children.

"Metropol"

Time: Sundays from 13:00 to 17:00

In a hotel "Metropol" arrange, perhaps, the best brunches in Moscow. Firstly, there is a very large menu: you can start with traditional pancakes, continue with soups and all kinds of snacks, including salads close to the Russian heart and stomach. "Metropolitan" and jelly, and persimmon with goat cheese, and finish hot with dumplings with pike or veal teriyaki. In addition, the menu is updated every week. Secondly, guests are not only fed, but also entertained: for adults, they conduct a tour of the hotel, and for children - interactive quests. Thirdly, a visitor who celebrates his birthday at the brunch is presented with a set of cakes made by the hotel's pastry chef Atilla Sabo. Fourthly, there is a system of discounts: if a guest makes an advance payment for 7 days, then the discount is 7%, and if for 14 days - respectively, 14%. Children under 6 years old are treated free of charge. The cost of a brunch with alcohol will be 5,400 rubles, without alcohol - 4,450 rubles, for children from 6 years old - 1,600 rubles. brunch "Premium" with premium varieties of champagne, whiskey and cognac will cost 8,400 rubles.

In most European countries and America, Sunday brunch in a restaurant has already become a good tradition. In Russian establishments, this new service appeared relatively recently. Branch - what is it? Eating specially organized on a day off has its own advantages, thanks to which, even 100 years after its appearance, it remains so popular.

Branch. What it is?

Weekend breakfast, smoothly flowing into lunch, is called brunch. It came from two English words breakfast and lunch. With such a feast, the approximate meal time is just between breakfast and lunch - from 11 to 15 in the afternoon. And it's not just that.

A traditional English breakfast usually starts at 8 am. But after a long Saturday evening, I really want to sleep a little longer. Accordingly, the morning meal is transferred several hours ahead. Interestingly, what distinguishes brunch from a traditional breakfast or lunch is not the presence of certain, specially prepared dishes, but a relaxed friendly atmosphere and good mood.

As a rule, brunch takes place in restaurants. First of all, this is due to the fact that on a day off you do not have to spend time cooking. Sunday brunch is a time of rest and relaxation with family, children, friends or employees.

History of brunch

The appearance of the term "brunch" in the English lexicon is associated with the name of the famous writer, dreamer and inventor Lewis Carroll. As a student at Oxford University, he invited students and faculty to gather for breakfast on Sundays, usually outside the walls of the educational institution, to socialize in a relaxed atmosphere. Friendly conversations usually dragged on for several hours and ended with a joint dinner. This is where the name brunch comes from.

What it is became widely known in 1896 thanks to the publication of an article about Sunday food in the British magazine Punch. In America, brunch gained popularity in the 30s of the XX century and has since become an indispensable attribute of a family weekend getaway.

Sample menu for a feast

There is no particular dish that the word "brunch" could be associated with. The menu of such a feast is no different from the most ordinary breakfast. As a rule, on such a day they eat scrambled eggs with sausages, bacon, toast with butter and jam, pancakes, a lot of different pastries, fresh fruits and natural juice.

But what makes brunch different from a traditional breakfast is that it smoothly turns into lunch. Its time falls on 14-15 hours in the afternoon. In many countries this is lunch time, but in England it is called lunch. It is usually held in restaurants or pubs. This is primarily due to the fact that on a weekday at these hours, people, for the most part, are at work and cannot have lunch at home.

Weekend family brunches are also most often held in restaurants. In addition to those dishes that are traditionally served for breakfast, it offers meat or fish, salads, potato dishes, and fruit pudding for dessert. Alcoholic drinks typical of brunch are Bloody Mary, Mimosa, classic sparkling champagne and Irish coffee.

Since Sunday brunches in UK restaurants have already become a good tradition, such establishments have a special menu for this day. Therefore, it is enough just to book a table, and it is not at all necessary to specify the dishes in advance.

Features of organizing a brunch for children

Traditionally, brunches are held in a large friendly circle, where all family members are present, from babies to older people. Children usually get bored sitting at such feasts. Therefore, restaurants on this day take all the care of the guys on themselves. They hold competitions, mini-performances, concerts, move a lot and do crafts with their own hands.

So that children do not interfere with their parents to communicate with friends and relatives, a special buffet is organized for them. Therefore, the older generation can enjoy social conversations to its fullest, while the younger generation can have fun, have fun and develop.

There was even such a concept as “children's brunch”, where children, like adults, invite their friends. If it takes place in a restaurant, then there is nothing to worry about, since the institution itself will take care of organizing the holiday. At home, it will be difficult to do without an animator. Otherwise, the entertainment of children will fall on the shoulders of adults, and you will not be able to relax normally.

What is the popularity of brunch?

This type of family holiday weekend is gaining more and more popularity every year. Almost all restaurants in Europe, America, and now Russia offer to host a brunch on Sunday. What is it and why is it so attractive to people?

Firstly, brunch is a great opportunity to spend a day off not at the kitchen stove, but with your family, in a warm friendly atmosphere. For those who prefer homemade food and love to cook, you can organize a similar feast at home or in the country.

Secondly, brunch is a late breakfast, which is especially appropriate after a long Saturday evening.

Thirdly, this is a great opportunity not only to take a break from work and relax yourself, but also to entertain children. Special programs that are organized in restaurants allow both adults and children to enjoy the weekend.

Sunday brunches in different countries

Despite the fact that the birthplace of the brunch is Britain, it still gained the greatest popularity in the United States of America. Many families prefer to visit McDonald's together on this day, ordering sandwiches and fries.

In France, brunch is complete without croissants, French toast and jam. Here it is called brunch, avoiding the word "brunch".

It is no less interesting to spend this day in China. In this country, brunch is a tea ceremony. And already for tea, steam pies baozi, rice porridge or fuzhu are served.

Brunch has appeared in Russia quite recently. Therefore, if in restaurants in other countries the menu for such a meal has already been worked out, then in Russian establishments there is no specific set of dishes. This means that each restaurant treats brunch in its own way, one serving porridge or scrambled eggs, the other serving hearty meat dishes from the very morning. Themed brunches are interesting. On such days, restaurants offer dishes of European countries or Asian cuisine.

In fact, brunch is a great excuse to get out of the house, eat delicious food and have a good rest before the new work week.
