The service sector continues to develop rapidly, being one of the most important sectors of the national economy. Keeping pace with the times, the SUSU Higher School of Economics and Management prepares highly qualified specialists in the direction of “ Economics and management at enterprises of the service sector, recreation and tourism". One of them is Maria Popkova, art manager of the Maximillians restaurant.

- Why did you choose the specialty "restaurant service manager" and entered SUSU?

- I finished school in a village near Magnitogorsk and decided to enter a Chelyabinsk university. When I saw SUSU, I simply "fell in love" with this university and realized that I wanted to study here and nowhere else! I am a person of emotions, it is important for me to love the place in which I will spend most of my life. I managed to enter the budget, I thought that, apparently, this is fate. And she did not regret the chosen profession in the future.

- Maria, tell us about your work as an art manager.

- I have been working in the restaurant business for a long time. As a student, I started working in the Megapolis holding as a waiter. In my last year, I was promoted to become a manager, and soon the general manager of the Gorki shopping and entertainment complex, where she managed four establishments of the holding. This summer I left Megapolis and now I work as an art manager at the Maximillians restaurant, organizing concerts. Since the "stars" of show business come to us to perform, I often have to organize their performances. In addition, the scope of responsibilities includes the selection of live music groups, the organization of entertainment programs. Every Friday and Saturday, the restaurant hosts themed parties with a drawing of prizes: the art manager is engaged in drawing up a script, selecting partners, concluding agreements, decorating photo zones, and so on. I love this job because it is very creative.

- What are the most memorable moments during the years of study?

- Of course, the defense of the diploma! I was very calmly engaged in preparing him and did not worry at all. But it was on the day of defense that I realized that the big story of my life was coming to an end. I am immensely grateful to my scientific advisor Ksenia Valerievna Aikhel, because it was she who helped me to become a real professional. Last semester, I was invited to read 3 subjects in the restaurant business at my home department. I was happy to collaborate with the department, communicate with students and remember my student life. We even went with them to Sochi for the Formula 1 championship, where we got a lot of experience.

- What was most useful in your work?

- All theoretical knowledge was useful, but practice was most useful. The university provides a unique opportunity to try yourself in the profession through practical training and cooperation with the city's enterprises. Also, studying at SUSU helped me develop my communication skills.

- What are your plans for the future?

- To develop, not to stand still, to learn something new. There are so many interesting things in the world, and I am sure that I have a lot to learn, try, see. And, of course, I have a dream to open my own restaurant.

- What can you wish SUSU students who are now studying and want to connect their lives with the restaurant business?

At South Ural State University, anyone has many opportunities to express and express themselves. While there is time, you have to try everything to understand what is yours and what is not yours. Take every chance and always say yes! You don't have to imitate anyone, you don't have to look up to anyone. You need to find your own path, what you like and develop in this direction.

Learning methods

The definition did not scare you off? Then you should think about training. Where can you master such a type of activity as the hotel and restaurant business? Where should a person go to get an appropriate education? There are a lot of options. Everyone chooses one or another institution to build their career and receive education in the hotel and restaurant industry.

Briefly listing all possible training locations, the following organizations can be distinguished:

  • universities in Russia and abroad;
  • colleges;
  • organizations offering retraining;
  • private training companies.

Each training option has its own characteristics. They will be discussed further. What to look for in this or that case? How to become a restaurateur without too many problems?

Retraining

Perhaps we should start with the least common scenario. We are talking about taking retraining courses. They are usually organized either by the employer or by specialized labor exchanges.

The average term of study is 2-3 months. No admissions tests are required. Upon graduation, the citizen receives a certificate of retraining as a restaurateur. From now on, he will be able to work in the hotel and restaurant business.

Private centers

The next option for training is contacting private training centers. it good way receiving additional education as well as self-development. With the help of specialized courses, you can easily master the hotel and restaurant business. It is recommended to inquire about the programs offered by these or those private educational institutions.

They usually study for about a year. In rare cases, training is several months or years. After listening to lectures, it is usually required to pass the final testing, to pass the exam. In the second, the graduate will receive a diploma of higher education. It is he who attracts many employers. Although, as practice shows, the hotel and restaurant business allows you to successfully build a career with a diploma of secondary specialized education.

Depending on the type of study chosen, you will have to stay either 2 years, or 3, or 4. In the first two cases, we are talking about secondary specialized education based on the 9th or 11th grade, respectively. Higher education takes 4 years.

A distinctive feature of education in universities and colleges is the presence of entrance tests. To be admitted as a student, you will need to pass some exams. About them a little later. First, you should find out where exactly in Russia you can go to study as a restaurateur.

Universities for training

There are a lot of higher educational institutions in Russia. Where do they teach in the direction of "hotel and restaurant business"? Universities in Russia that offer to become restaurateurs are the following:

  • Plekhanov University;
  • Russian State University for the Humanities;
  • Moscow State Institute named after Sechenov;
  • Russian State University of Tourism and Service (Moscow).

These are not all educational institutions. In almost every humanitarian university, you can become a restaurateur. Only the above-mentioned places, as students say, teach best in the chosen direction.

College

Are you interested in the hotel and restaurant business? College is the most common way to get an appropriate education to start a career. Usually, admission to specialized schools after 9th or after 11th grade is considered.

Depending on the chosen educational institution, entrance tests are either present or absent. Where exactly should I go to study? You can choose a humanitarian college. And there to see if there is a direction of interest to the applicant. As already mentioned, after the 9th grade they study for 2 years, after 11 - 3 years.
