How to color boiled eggs in husks. Easter eggs in onion skins

The bright holiday of Easter and the whole week after it are impossible without eggs painted in different colors.

Since ancient times, our ancestors have come up with different ways to paint them. The most common, perhaps, is - in onion skins.

Since onions are of different types, their husks also have differences in color. Use this feature to give the eggs shades and even patterns.

Prepare:

  • onion peel;
  • eggs;
  • salt;
  • vegetable oil;
  • gauze;
  • elastic bands, threads;
  • lace trims;
  • any greenery, flower petals that you find in the house.

The classic way of dyeing eggs with onion peels

Fold the onion husks into a saucepan and fill with cold water so that there is a third of free space in it.

Boil over medium heat for 40-50 minutes so that the water acquires a dark, saturated shade. You can use ready-made boiling water, then reduce the cooking time to a quarter of an hour.

Remove the eggs from the refrigerator at least an hour in advance so that they do not burst and stain during cooking. Dip them in hot onion solution and season with salt. One tablespoon of salt is enough for 3 liters of boiling water.

Boil the eggs over low heat for 10-15 minutes and turn them periodically so that their color is as uniform as possible.

Remove the finished eggs in a bowl and cover with cold water. After cooling, wipe them with a dry towel and spread with vegetable oil. This will give them a beautiful shine.

The most exciting Easter Eve action for me has always been coloring chicken eggs... The first memory is how my grandmother and I paint eggs bright pink. As a result, both fingers were colored more than the eggs themselves, and my grandmother uttered a phrase that I remember forever: "It would be better if I took onion peels as usual." In that memorable year, the dyes were bright, and with them both the meat and the cake in the basket received a particle of acid color. My grandmother didn’t buy any more artificial dye.

There are some tips and even tricks to help you end up with very beautiful and vibrant eggs that are dyed without the use of a chemical.

You can initially take eggs with shells of different shades and cook them for the same amount of time. Whites will become reddish, brown - dark and original in their own way.

How to paint eggs

  1. Wash the eggs. Peel ten onions.
  2. Transfer the husk to a saucepan. Fill with water. Add salt. Cook for 20-30 minutes.
  3. Place the washed eggs in a saucepan. Make sure they are completely covered in water and husks.
  4. Bring the liquid in a saucepan to a boil. Then simmer for another 15 minutes.
  5. Transfer the eggs to a napkin. Wait until they cool down. Rub with a little sunflower oil to make them shine.

And when you, observing the ancient custom, fight with dyes for, and then peel the eggs from the shell, you will see that there is pure protein inside, which you can eat without fear. Isn't it worth it to prepare the onion skins ahead of time?

Perhaps to some, this method will seem too ancient to follow. But, believe me, such eggs look bright against the background of others, painted in blue, green or red. Our ancestors knew how to get natural color without effort... Write how you paint chicken eggs!

Hello dear readers. The tradition of dyeing Easter eggs is rooted in the distant past. Then our ancestors did not have the opportunity to use bright synthetic pigments. Therefore, natural improvised means were used for this. To this day, one of the most popular ways to give eggs for Easter a festive look is the onion peel dyeing technique. But do not immediately dismiss it, they say, it is too boring and trite. Firstly, this method is absolutely harmless to health. And secondly, with the help of such an affordable material, you can get not only different shades, but also apply original patterns. And the possibility of creativity should not be discounted. How to paint eggs in onion skins - you will learn about all the nuances from this article.

Why eggs are painted with onion skins

Given the love for onions, it can be assumed that this material could always be prepared a lot. It is cheap and not used for food. In addition, with its help, it was possible to obtain a beautiful even shade with a reddish tint.

As you know, it was red eggs that were the most preferred option for the Easter celebration. Why? There is an interesting legend on this score.

After the death and subsequent resurrection of Christ, his followers dispersed around the world, spreading the message about this miracle and the opening of the heavenly gates for everyone. Maria Magdalena also did not stand aside. She decided not to go anywhere, but straight to the Roman emperor. It was impossible to come to such an important person empty-handed.

Therefore, the girl took a chicken egg with her. She was strapped for funds and could not afford any excesses in this regard. Moreover, the gift also had a symbolic meaning: the egg looks completely lifeless from the outside, but inside it lurks the rudiment of a new life.

Having presented her more than modest gift, Mary Magdalene announced to the great Tiberius about the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. To which the head of the Roman Empire responded with indignation that this simply could not happen. This is impossible, since there are no miracles. And then the snow-white egg that he held in his hand turned red - the color of the blood of Christ shed for the sins of all mortals.

This is how the tradition of giving Easter eggs a red hue was born. This became a tribute to the memory of Jesus' sacrifice, a symbol of faith and hope for divine love.

How to paint eggs in onion skins

Everything is extremely simple here. Unless a lazy person can cope with the task at hand. First you need to prepare onion scales. A lot of material will be needed - the more, the more saturated the final color will turn out.

Only the top layers, brown and dry, are selected. If you use juicy plates, then the eggs will acquire a greenish tint. And it won't be possible to store such raw materials for a long time - it can rot.

Many housewives believe that only white eggs should be selected for staining. This opinion is wrong. Whites are more suitable for soft, pastel colors. Brown-shell eggs, on the other hand, are ideal for rich, vibrant hues.

After staining, whites will always be lighter, regardless of the selected color and the dye used. If you want variety - use snow-white, and beige, and brownish, and speckled.

To prevent the eggs from cracking, do not start boiling them chilled. You should first put them out of the refrigerator and allow time to warm up to room temperature. This will take about an hour.

To prepare the coloring solution, you will need a large container (at least three liters) and many onion peels. It should be borne in mind that the pan or basin used for this will stain from the inside. Therefore, either the vessel must be well washed, or it will be necessary to take the one that it is not a pity to cover up. To obtain a concentrated dye, the selected container is filled to the maximum with onion raw materials and filled with water.

If you plan to boil eggs along with the husks, then it should be boiling water. Let the composition infuse for 1-2 hours. Then a pinch of salt is poured here, cold eggs are laid and set to boil. After boiling, it should take 5-10 minutes.

Then the container is removed from the heat and the solution is allowed to cool. Only then are the eggs taken out and dried. This method will give lighter color options.

There is also another way. With its help, a deep and even shade is obtained. Pour onion skins with cold water and bring to a boil. After it is boiled over low heat for about 20 minutes, removed from the stove and the liquid is filtered.

It can now be used to color hard-boiled eggs, although some housewives also paint soft-boiled eggs. To do this, they are dipped in hot dye and boiled for a while.

The duration of the staining affects the color:

Up to minutes - light, golden or beige.

2-3 minutes - orange or light brown

5-7 minutes and more - dark with a reddish tint.

It should be noted that the color of the husk itself affects the color. If it is yellow, then the eggs will turn out yellowish-orange. Well, brown or reddish will give the appropriate shade.

How to paint eggs for Easter with onion peels with a pattern and pattern

Using various tweaks, you can get different interesting color schemes. Below are ways to get all kinds of patterns and interesting effects.

This will require a variety of materials.

  1. Onion husks in different shades.
  1. Chicken eggs.
  1. Salt.
  1. Paper.
  1. Elastic bands or thick threads.
  1. Rice groats.
  1. Lace.
  1. Gauze cut or old nylon tights.
  1. Small leaves and flowers of various plants (parsley, begonias, cilantro, etc.).
  1. Needle.
  1. Insulating tape.
  1. Wax.
  1. Vegetable oil.
  1. Cotton wool.

Circled and speckled eggs

To obtain a speckled pattern, proceed by analogy with the previous method. Only here rice grains are used as auxiliary elements. The moistened egg is rolled in rice, wrapped in cheesecloth, securing its ends.

Instead of a gauze cut, you can use old ladies' tights by cutting them into large pieces. Prepared eggs are boiled in onion skins. After the auxiliary materials are removed and the finished product is dried.

Here you can experiment using different cereals. For example, peas produce rather large spots. And if you use olives cut into rings or wire insulation, you get a spherical pattern.

Delicate ornament

A florid pattern on the shell can be obtained if lace is used instead of threads. It is not necessary to take expensive store ones. If you have mastered the basics of crocheting, you can knit openwork lace yourself in just a few minutes.

The resulting material is tightly wrapped around the egg. The edges can be secured with multiple stitches or a knot.

Plant motives

You need to find some small leaves. For this, lettuce greens (dill, parsley, etc.), houseplants, or any of those that you can find in the yard during this springtime are suitable. Flowers will work too.

The collected samples are straightened and applied to the shell surface. A drop of water will help to temporarily fix them. Now they need to be fixed with gauze or nylon.

Then you can start painting. Keep in mind that plant pigments can leave color marks on the shell: green from leaves and others, depending on the color of the flower used.

Geometric shapes and various silhouettes

Such patterns are achieved through the use of figures cut from electrical tape. It can be arbitrary geometric cutting, animals, hearts, plot elements, letters, Easter symbols, etc.

The resulting pieces are well attached to the shell and do not require additional fixation. In order not to get into a mess, try the method on one egg. Some types of electrical tape, after boiling, adhere to the shell tightly.

Color gradation

This method will be more complicated than the previous ones. The selection of suitable containers will be an important point. The eggs should fit tightly in them, without the possibility of displacement. After they are securely placed, a rich onion broth is poured. It should only cover a third of the eggs. You need to use a boiled product.

Now you can put the container on the stove. Let it boil for about five minutes. After that, some clean hot water is added here, reducing the concentration of onion dye. The eggs should now be two-thirds liquid.

After keeping them on fire for about three minutes, you need to add ordinary water to the container again, preferably hot. The broth should cover the eggs completely. Reduce the heat treatment time again. Now it will be enough to hold the eggs on the fire for one or two minutes. After the dye is drained.

The result is Easter eggs with a fairly smooth transition from rich to light tone. If desired, you can add water in very small portions, achieving even smoother transitions.

You will need scraps of onion peels of different shades and finely torn paper. The materials must be mixed. The surface of the egg is moistened and rolled in a paper-onion mixture. Each egg with adhering material is wrapped with gauze and tied.

In this form, they are boiled in a cooked broth. Processing time is about half an hour. After that, the eggs are removed from the makeshift bags and freed from the adhering debris.

Also, some semblance of marbling can be obtained by crushing dry or slightly soggy husks and wrapping them around the eggs with the same gauze.

Frost patterns

In this way, you can apply various patterns to already colored eggs. To do this, you need to arm yourself with an ordinary needle and scratch lines and curls on the shell. In Ukraine, eggs processed using this technique are called “dryapanks” or “shkryabanks” (from Ukrainian to scratch).

In this way, you can create both simple patterns and whole plot pictures. It all depends on your desire and perseverance. The desired ornament can be applied with a simple pencil, and instead of a needle, use any pointed object, for example, a nail or an awl.

Striped eggs

Thick threads are used to obtain narrow stripes. They are tightly wrapped around eggs in an arbitrary direction. It will be more convenient to use rubber bands. If you place them perpendicular to each other, symbolic crosses will appear on the surface of the shell. After preparation, the eggs should be boiled in the prepared dye.

Wax painting

This is the most time consuming method. You will need melted wax and a needle to apply the pattern. Liquid wax is applied drop by drop and distributed so that it completely fills certain shapes.

It should be borne in mind that the areas covered with wax will then be white. If this does not suit you, then use brown eggs or slightly tint the white ones by immersing them briefly in a decoction of the husk.

Wax can be used for drawing or writing

Only chilled dye can be used to color painted eggs. Therefore, in order to obtain a deep color, its concentration must be maximized. Eggs are immersed in this broth for several hours. Then the wax pads can be carefully scraped off or stacked by immersing the eggs in hot water.

Glossy effect

Eggs colored with any of the methods described above can be given a beautiful shine. To do this, it is enough to moisten a cotton ball in any vegetable oil and rub the shell.

Eggs are cooked until fully cooked (hard-boiled) from the moment of boiling, laying in cold water.
Slightly undercooked eggs are boiled a little less: to get soft-boiled eggs they are boiled, in a bag -.
Cook homemade fresh chicken eggs longer - from 8 (soft-boiled) to 13 minutes (hard-boiled).

  • raw chicken eggs - 8-10 pcs.,
  • onion peel - 1 l,
  • rice (cereal),

  • old nylon stockings or tights,
  • elastic bandage,
  • gauze,
  • paper,
  • scissors,
  • leaves and flowers of plants,
  • threads,
  • rubber bands,
  • lace,
  • needle.

Rice

  1. Cut the stocking into pieces so that one egg fits in one piece, leaving the edges that can be tied tightly.
  2. Tie one end of the stocking to form a pouch.
  3. Place the egg in the bag and add the rice. Tie the bag so that the nylon fits snugly around the shell.
  4. Use your fingers to spread the rice inside the bag so that the grains evenly cover the entire egg.
  5. Boil the husked eggs according to the instructions above.
  6. When the eggs are boiled and cooled, cut open the bag and rinse the eggs with cold water to rinse the rice. Get speckled eggs. Why is rice used? Other cereals quickly boil down and turn into porridge, leaving no clear imprints on the shell.

Leaves and flowers

  1. A popular way to color patterned eggs is to use parsley leaves.
  2. Choose beautiful neat leaves.
  3. Wet a leaf with water and attach to the shell, then fix the leaf with a nylon bag.
  4. Instead of parsley, you can use dill, cilantro, currant leaves, chamomile flowers and any other plants.
  5. The area of the shell covered with plant material will remain unpainted. The eggs will have a clear pattern with natural contours.

Paper

  1. Cut your writing paper into small pieces of any shape.
  2. To make the fragments neat, first draw the outline with a simple pencil, and then cut out. These can be abstract ornaments or thematic drawings.
  3. Moisten a piece of paper with water so that it sticks to the shell, and secure with a capron. If you are worried that the fragments will move, and the drawing will turn out to be smudged, use self-adhesive paper or tape.

Thread or rubber bands

To paint eggs with a pattern, you can do without a stocking, but take, for example, threads or elastic bands.

  1. Simply wrap each egg in random order to create striped eggs.
  2. You can use rubber bands instead of threads. Choose thicker rubber bands so they don't burst in the boiling water.
  3. Do not pull the eggs too tightly - the shells may crack.

Lace

Another option is to wrap the eggs in lace. As a result, the shell will be decorated with luxurious openwork ornaments. The finer the lace, the more sophisticated the pattern will be. Simple but cute diamonds on the shell are obtained by placing an egg in a coarse mesh.

Zelenka

With the help of onion peels, they make amazing drawings on eggs (see the photo below) - with stains like marble. You will also need an additional brilliant green solution and gauze.

  1. Chop the husk with scissors, in a blender or in a coffee grinder.
  2. Moisten raw eggs with water and roll in crushed husks.
  3. Fix the fragments of the husk with gauze or nylon stocking. Tie the edges of the makeshift pouch tightly.

  5. Boil eggs for 10 minutes and cool.
  6. Drain and cut the cheesecloth gently. Rinse the husk off the shell with running water. It is recommended to wear gloves during such work.

To make the streaks even more varied, use the husks of different types of onions. Shredded writing paper can be added to the crushed husk. Please note - if there is a lot of paper, the eggs will turn out pale.

Needle

You can even apply a drawing after you have painted them with onion peel. Any ornament is simply scratched on the shell with a needle. Painted eggs can be complemented with factory-themed Easter-themed stickers or tied with ribbons.

Gauze or bandage

You can connect your imagination and use any other materials by painting eggs according to this principle. Instead of a stocking, gauze or a wide elastic bandage will also work.

  • The water in which you will boil the eggs must be abundantly salted. If the shell breaks, the egg will not leak.
  • For a more intense color, use vinegar. You can grate the egg with vinegar before staining, after staining, or add vinegar to the water.
  • To ensure the shade lays down evenly, wash the eggs before dyeing using a soft sponge. You can also rub the shells with rubbing alcohol.
  • Do not cook eggs for too long - they will taste unpleasant. If you want to get a darker saturated color, hold the eggs after dyeing in a cold decoction of onion peels for several hours.
  • To make the eggs shine, rub the shells with vegetable oil.

That's all the tricks for creating beautiful and original Easter eggs. Onion peels are a natural dye, so all procedures are completely safe.
